This year, we are joining the trick-or-treat for Unicef as this activity gives a special meaning to Halloween by giving kids an opportunity to learn the value of helping others.
This is not the usual trick or treat event, where kids asked for treats but they will ask family members and friends donations that will be used to help save children’s lives. The money they raise will provide life-saving medicine, nutrition supplement to those children with severe acute malnutrition abd even give mothers prenatal and neonatal health monitoring during pregnancy.
Dubbed as the original Kids Helping Kids campaign, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began in the US in 1950, when Philadelphia schoolchildren collected money in decorated milk cartons on Halloween to help children in need around the world. They raised a grand total of US$17 – and kicked off a global campaign that has since raised more than US$170 million worldwide to help fund UNICEF’s life-saving programmes for children.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF landed in the Philippines in 2012, bringing special meaning to Halloween by giving kids a unique opportunity to learn the value of helping others. Kids can be superheroes to children in need by collecting funds in special Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes as they go door-to-door on Halloween. Since 2012, Filipino children and families have raised over Php 900,000 to help the poorest children in the Philippines and worldwide enjoy access to clean water, quality education, medicines and immunization, therapeutic food, and much more.
